Inspiration:
I wrote No More Veils with duel meaning. First, I look at America singing her song. She’s watched what’s happening, and see that politicians are running game on her, and she now wants to go her own way. I likened it to a woman in a relationship that she was told to like or perhaps thought she like at a young age. Later, she realizes that she has arrived.
The melody and lyrics of No More Veils are one of my favorite creations. I wanted a song that you would hum in your head, and lyrics that touch the heart. The Samba feel is perfect for the mood I wanted to capture, as is that soft female voice. I pictured a young lady fresh from a breakup, walking the beach on some tropical island, in her sun dress and sipping on a tropical drink. She’s found herself and will no longer wear anything that covers the real her.
[Verse 1 — Revised]
I used to turn the volume up, drown out the signs
Smiled through the silence, read between the lines
Held on to comfort, though it felt untrue
'Cause sometimes the lie feels safer than the view
[Verse 2]
Like lovers stayin' out of fear of bein’ alone
I clung to the comfort of the lies I’d been shown
But the mask cracked slow, like dawn breaks stone
And now I can’t unsee what I’ve always known
[Chorus]
No more veils, no more plays
I'm not a pawn in your parade
It hurts to see, but it hurts more to stay
In the dream you sold, in the game you play
I'm walkin’ out of the dark today
No more veils, no more ways
To make me stay
[Verse 3]
The truth is cold, but it cleanses like rain
And lies—they rot, like rust on a chain
You called it peace, but it was just control
Now the cost of comfort’s takin’ its toll
[Bridge]
It’s like leaving someone you once adored
Who turned your heart into a civil war
It breaks you down, but builds you true
I had to lose the dream to find what’s due
[Chorus]
No more veils, no more plays
I'm not a pawn in your parade
It hurts to see, but it hurts more to stay
In the dream you sold, in the game you play
I'm walkin’ out of the dark today
No more veils, no more ways
To make me stay
[Outro]
So I rise, scared but strong
Took too long to know right from wrong
But now I’m free, I see the light
And I won't go blind for your peace at night
