Wings and a Sky

Inspiration
I wrote Wings and a Sky for young women, and particularly young Black women. I felt like they needed a song that inspired them to seek their inner strength, but to know that finding a good man can be rewarding and uplifting as well.
I also wanted them to stop allowing society to wrongly label them and pressure them, and to know how powerful they really are, and what a good man could do to accent their lives.
[Verse 1]
They say, “Don’t chase a man, girl, chase a dream,”
Like love makes me small or weak at the seams.
But I built my fire from heartbreak and grit,
And he saw my flame—and stood close to it.
They tell me I’m fragile, a damsel in glass,
While I’m out here breaking generational pasts.
They warn me of chains in his helping hand,
But they don’t know the strength in a man who understands.
[Chorus]
I don’t need your cage of pity,
I’ve got wings and a sky of my own.
Don’t need your sisterhood scripts or your city,
Where tears are currency and hearts are stone.
I’m not your project, not your cause—
Don’t write me down in your noble clause.
I’m rising loud, I’m rising proud—
With love at my side and my head in the clouds.
[Verse 2]
I’ve seen queens tear down other thrones,
Sisters preaching strength while throwing stones.
Telling me I need to "go it alone,”
But what’s so strong about being cold on your own?
I’ve cried in silence, smiled through war,
Dug my heels in a hardwood floor.
He reached down, I reached back—
That’s not weakness, babe, that’s a pact.
[Chorus]
I don’t need your cage of pity,
I’ve got wings and a sky of my own.
Don’t need your lectures dressed up as pretty,
Your borrowed rage in a borrowed tone.
I’m not your victim, not your play—
I write my truth in my own damn way.
I’m rising fierce, I’m rising free—
And if he lifts me, he lifts all of me.
[Bridge]
So stop selling shame as power,
Stop clipping wings in ivory towers.
Let me love, let me climb—
Don’t box me in with your storyline.
[Final Chorus]
I don’t need your cage of pity,
I’ve got wings and a sky of my own.
I walk with love and I walk with grit,
And I’ll build my throne from stone and bone.
I’m not a tale you get to spin—
This crown is mine, and I’ll let him in.
I’m rising full, not half or hollow—
He doesn’t lead—I choose to follow.
[Outro]
Yeah, I choose to fly, I choose to feel—
Don’t tell me what strong women should conceal.
I’m not your victim, never was—
Just a phoenix in pearls with her own cause.
